About
In my recent abstract paintings I continue to improvise with color, texture and shape. In the last 3 years I have been informed by my travels and a residency at Valparaiso, Mojacar, in southern Spain. Mojacar is a magical world of color, light and shade where the influences of the Moorish culture are still visible. The deep azure of the sky and the matching doors and windows set against the whitewashed houses are a symphony of white and blue. It is a spectrum of brightness and light, as it exists in time and space. Light illuminates and captures the exotic atmosphere and textures of the land and sea in my paintings. Pods, seeds, shells and rocks become abstract shapes and patterns. My interest in the natural world goes back to high school where my biology teacher, in Hamburg, Germany took us on weekly field trips to draw and identify trees, ferns and mushrooms. The many different materials I use in my paintings create complex and poetic works layered with meaning of open seas and land. I incorporate enhanced photos from my international travels with hand colored rice paper, silk, velvet and felt to add depth and texture. Soil and black magna contrast with washes of acrylic and water-soluble crayons. I play organic shapes against geometric patterns, circles and diagonals with charcoal, graphite, colored pencils and dyes. Some forms are scraped and layered while others are fully present. I work spontaneously and intuitively; losing all boundaries, like swimming in a vast sea.
